Rachel Brown - Fine Arist

Rachel painting 'Thistle'.

'Carving in wood or stone, painting or sketching the human form with the lightest and most expressive of touches; she is a well of still, calm beauty that brings precision and heart to every medium.' - The Lodge Arts Collective

Rachel Brown was born in Colchester, Essex. Being exposed from a young age to the stunning countryside of Essex and Norfolk, as well as the various fine artists emerging from Colchester School of Art, Rachel developed her skills simply by capturing the beauty around her. Though Rachel's work is primarily in watercolour, most of her pieces begin as sketches; an approach which has sharpened her ability to capture scenes, wildlife, and landscapes so precisely.

Throughout the years, Rachel has honed her abilities simply by sketching and painting the beauty that surrounded her as she moved from England to France and then to America.

Settling in Scotland in 2010, Rachel found herself surrounded by limitless, dramatic, and breathtaking scenery which has become the base inspiration behind her work today.

As well as focusing on the nature around her, Rachel enjoys drawing inspiration from some of Japan's most treasured and ancient techniques. She has taken Tataki Zome, or flower pounding technique, and added her own embellishments which result in delicate and colourful snapshots of seasonal plantlife in Scotland and the UK.

One can also see an influence from the Sumi-e technique in some of Rachel's more abstract work, which allows us to experience the same beauty of our world but through, perhaps, a more thought-provoking lens.

Rachel currently lives in Dumfries & Galloway and is part of the Lodge Arts Collective.
